Turkey Hunting with the Warmbag - Tracy Breen

If you are from the upper Midwest like I am, spring turkey hunting isn’t always a pleasant experience. The word “spring” can be deceiving. When I think of the word spring, I think of song birds singing at daybreak, the warm sun filtering through the treetops onto my face and of course the sound of a gobble as night gives way to the coming day. However, in the northern spring woods, I often encounter circumstances that are not as pleasant as the spring day made up in my mind.  I have turkey hunted in below-freezing temperatures.  I have turkey hunted on cold, windy days.  I have turkey hunted when it was snowing like it was Christmas.  On days like these, leaning against a tree in a thin pair of pants and light jacket doesn’t cut it.  On days like this, even a few layers aren’t enough to keep me warm.  On cold spring days, the Warmbag really comes in handy.         Part of the challenge of turkey hunting is being able to sit next to a tree on your bottom for long periods of time.  When you sit stationary for a long time, it doesn’t take long before you start getting cold.  Using the Warmbag while turkey hunting allows you to sit against a tree for hours and stay warm even if you don’t have many layers on under the Warmbag.  The Warmbag keeps you comfortable which allows you to sit against a tree for as long as you have to.

Most hunters who turkey hunt a lot often get cold in the morning because they don’t like to wear a lot of layers. After a few hours of sitting, they may find themselves running and gunning and if they have lots of clothes on, they’ll be sweating like crazy after a few minutes of chasing gobblers.  This is where the Warmbag shines. Hunters can wear one layer of hunting clothes under the Warmbag and when they get up to start chasing gobblers, they can take it off and put it back in the stuff sack or simply pull the bottom half up around the waist, clip the waist belt together and be ready to run and gun.

I think one of the best times to use the Warmbag while turkey hunting is late afternoon.  I typically sit for hours on end near a feeding location or roost site waiting for the turkeys to wander past.  Sitting in the Warmbag is comfortable and makes playing the waiting game much more enjoyable.  The Warmbag helps break up your outline so you won’t be spotted as easily by the eyes of the turkey.

The Warmbag is windproof and waterproof so hunters can remain comfortable even if it is raining and windy - which are both common in the spring.  Staying comfortable or lack there of is often why hunters go home early.  The Warmbag will help hardcore turkey hunters stay in the woods longer, thus increasing the chances of tagging a bird.
